We are building a world where Japanese tea is chosen by its producer, not defined by price or quantity.

WMATCHA&CO., LLC.

Origin & Vision

History

The roots of WMATCHA & CO. trace back to KANECHU (カネ忠), the tea house once run by Toshi’s ancestors in Wazuka, Kyoto. This lineage was gradually interrupted—by an accident that injured his great-grandfather, his grandfather’s early passing, and his father’s decision to leave tea behind during Japan’s postwar economic growth. With each generation, the craft and spirit of tea quietly faded.

At twenty-two, after studying in the United States, Toshi rediscovered his identity as a Japanese and felt drawn back to the spiritual culture of tea that had long remained at the margins of his life. Rather than preserving it as nostalgia, he chose to revive it with purpose. With no prior experience, he committed himself to inheriting the sleeping lineage of Wazuka—and to carrying his family’s tea heritage into the future.

Incentive

Exposure to global markets revealed two crises: low-quality matcha mislabeled as “Japanese” or “Ceremonial Grade” flooding the world, and modern urban life leaving people overstimulated and exhausted. In response, we returned to Kyoto—not only to restore genuine Uji-grown matcha, but to redefine its role in the modern world.

Matcha is not merely a beverage; it is a ritual of stillness and clarity, a cultural practice capable of restoring balance in an age of acceleration. WMATCHA & CO. exists to return this authenticity to the world through tea that carries origin, philosophy, and responsibility.

Location

Located in southern Kyoto, Wazuka Town—renowned as a “tea homeland”—joined the “Most Beautiful Villages in Japan” in 2013 and was designated a Japan Heritage site in 2015. Praised for its scenic tea fields, traditional tile-roofed villages, and centuries-old tea culture, Wazuka’s forests, river mist, and large day-night temperature swings produce aromatic, umami-rich tea leaves. The town supplies about 51% of Kyoto’s tencha and 47% of crude tea, making it a core hub of Uji matcha production.
