Always a Student of Nature

No matter how many years we grow tea, nature always has something new to teach us.

As the third-generation president of Shinryoku Sabō, I have spent my life working with tea in Iinan, a region blessed with pure water, clean air, and abundant natural beauty. These conditions shape every harvest, reminding us that great tea begins not with human skill alone, but with respect for the environment that makes it possible.

One of the principles that guides our work is to approach each season as if we were first-year students. Every year brings different weather, different challenges, and different opportunities. Rather than assuming we already know the answers, we observe carefully, learn continuously, and adapt to what nature provides.

This mindset influences everything we do. From cultivation and processing to teamwork and customer relationships, we believe sincerity is essential. We work honestly, appreciate the blessings of nature, and support one another in the shared goal of creating tea that people can genuinely enjoy.

In 2006, our efforts were recognized with the Emperor’s Cup, one of Japan’s highest honors in agriculture and forestry. While we are deeply grateful for this recognition, it has never changed our perspective. Awards may acknowledge past achievements, but every new harvest requires us to begin again with humility and curiosity.

Beyond tea production, I believe in sharing tea culture with future generations and communities. Whether supporting educational projects, welcoming visitors from around the world, or introducing children to tea through factory tours, I see tea as a way to connect people with nature, learning, and one another.

My hope is simple: that each cup reflects the character of Iinan and the care of the people who cultivate it. If someone takes a sip and feels a moment of comfort, appreciation, or wonder, then I believe we have done our job well.

For me, tea is a lifelong lesson—and I am still learning every day.
