A Visit with Kunitomo — Learning the Philosophy Behind Tosa Tea
We recently had the opportunity to visit a Tosa tea producer in Kochi Prefecture and spend time with Kunitomo, whose approach to tea left a lasting impression on us.
From guiding us along mountain roads to showing us the factory and tea house, his generosity extended far beyond hospitality. What resonated most was his quiet discipline and self-restraint—values deeply embedded not only in his tea production, but in his way of life.
For us as a younger generation, this visit was not simply about learning techniques or knowledge. Encountering Kunitomo’s philosophy, respect for nature, and long-term perspective felt like a lesson that will stay with us for life, and one we hope to pass on to future generations.
Through our conversation, we shared concerns about the growing gap between administrative intentions and the true potential of tea-producing regions. We believe the key lies in the next generation of farmers—people who embody their values through action while clearly expressing their passion.
We left with deep gratitude, carrying lessons that cannot be fully captured in words, and with a renewed determination to grow further before our next meeting.
