About Us
We’re former Japan National Team athletes from Uji, Kyoto, turned Japanese tea producers.

Story & Vision
Toshi and Shohei, co-founders and former teammates on their Uji high school American football team, share a deep bond rooted in resilience and trust. Both later represented Japan on the international stage, carrying their country’s spirit into global competition — an experience that shaped their shared sense of discipline, teamwork, and pride.
Toshi’s family has been in Wazuka for over 300 years, though much knowledge was lost after his great-grandfather’s early passing and Japan’s economic shift away from agriculture. Later, experiences in Silicon Valley and New York inspired him to revive this heritage by blending tradition with innovation. Shohei, with a background in finance, was drawn to tea’s wellness potential and the urgent challenges facing local producers, from succession issues to low incomes.
The name Wmatcha originates from “Wazuka,” the founders’ hometown and a tea-growing region famous for Uji matcha. Tea is deeply intertwined with Japanese spiritual culture: it unites people (Wa) and fosters harmony, like a circle or ring. Both matcha and the people connected by it express unique individuality shaped by their environment and the sensibilities of those who nurture them. The founders’ wish is to create a world where this harmony and diversity can be enjoyed, preparing a hopeful future for generations to come.

Insentive
Global markets revealed a harsh truth: low-quality matcha, mislabeled as “Japanese” or “Ceremonial Grade,” was misleading tea lovers and eroding trust. At the same time, modern life in cities like Silicon Valley, New York, and Tokyo left people disconnected and exhausted. To restore authenticity, we returned to Kyoto—not only to revive true Uji-grown matcha, but to position it as a modern wellness tool. More than a beverage, matcha is a ritual of stillness, clarity, and renewal.

Location
Located in southern Kyoto, Wazuka Town—renowned as a “tea homeland”—joined the “Most Beautiful Villages in Japan” in 2013 and was designated a Japan Heritage site in 2015. Praised for its scenic tea fields, traditional tile-roofed villages, and centuries-old tea culture, Wazuka’s forests, river mist, and large day-night temperature swings produce aromatic, umami-rich tea leaves. The town supplies about 51% of Kyoto’s tencha and 47% of crude tea, making it a core hub of Uji matcha production.

Philosophy
There is a space of quiet abundance, where the heart finds pause. Between you and me, a world takes shape—traced with closed eyes, excavated through imagination.
What holds true value in a world where novelty vanishes so quickly? Something precious, left behind—slipping quietly from memory. Bamboo blooms as it decays; moss clings to ancient stones atop 三輪山 (Mount Miwa), whispering of Japan’s past.
Hands pluck tea leaves, connecting with centuries of tradition. The past floats within the present; the inner world spills outward. Great truths take whimsical forms: the beautiful irregularity of tea leaves, the subtlety of aroma, and the depth of flavor.
Here, we begin to understand: the veins of a leaf and the essence of who you truly are. In this world of tea, we carry forward a thousand years of footsteps.
